Hiking Big Bend

The Window - a five mile hike down into a valley and over to a literal "window" in the rock wall to a spectacular view of the rocky desert. The kids did great! We packed a lunch and ate in the shade of a dry river bed and enjoyed lots of scrambling through narrow passages on this hike. It was an adventure to get there as Texas spring break crowds and road construction worked together for fantastic traffic jams. We made the best of it with audio books and snacks with cousins as we ran from car to car. The boys even shared a mate (an Argentinian tea drunk out of a strainer straw thingy - I'm sure it has a name, it's very cultural!) as we waited fort he one lane road to open up in our favor.

The Border Wall aka Santa Elena Canyon

This was actually our first hike and we did it in the mid-day heat after a picturesque drive through the park where we ate lunch on the cliffs by the "Mule Ears" Mountain (guess what it looks like??), watched wild horses cross the road, and listened to a ranger talk about the geology of the area.

Boquillas Canyon aka our illegal trip to Mexico Okay, we didn't technically go to Mexico, but we did order tacos and tamales in Spanish across the Rio Grande to the Mexican "restaurant" and then had it "delivered" by the owner wading across with his pant legs pulled up high....

Indianhead Road

This short but delightful hike was the perfect morning hike with just myself and the kids. We literally saw no one else and the scrambling and views were unparalleled. We discovered caves and petroglyphs.
